Community: Employers: Federal Work Study
The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program was established by Congress as part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. The purpose of the program is to promote part-time employment for students with financial need, help students in meeting their educational costs, provide relevant work experience, and build relationships between IUPUI and the Indianapolis community. A work-study award is included as part of the student's financial aid and is awarded through the IUPUI Office of Student Financial Aid Services. The IUPUI Federal Work-Study Program adheres to federal regulations.
The work-study program gives employers an incentive to participate by paying a percentage of the students’ earnings. Under the program, an employer pays only 30% of the student’s hourly wages; the rest is subsidized by federal funds. FWS jobs may be located on campus or in the community with eligible government or nonprofit agencies. Many offer career-related or community service experience.
ON CAMPUS: FWS Hiring Process & Forms
All on-campus departments that pay through an IU account are eligible to hire work-study eligible students.
Upon receiving the student’s FWS Authorization Form, employers must have the student complete the hiring process and paperwork BEFORE the student begins working to earn the FWS award.
OFF CAMPUS: Community Work-Study
An off-campus agency is eligible to employ work-study eligible students if it is a nonprofit or government agency AND has an existing FWS contract on file with the university. Employers who have questions about the program or are interested in applying to become an approved community work-study site should contact cwsjobs@iupui.edu or 317-274-5566.Upon receiving the student’s FWS Authorization Form, approved community work-study sites should access the hiring forms at http://csl.iupui.edu/cws.
