Students: Academic Planning: Returning to IUPUI

Reinstatement

  1. Reinstatement will be the decision of the school to which students are petitioning.
  2. Students who are reinstated will be classified as probationary students until their cumulative GPA is 2.0 or above. During the first regularly enrolled semester on probation, the student must achieve a semester GPA of at least a 2.3. In each subsequent semester on probation, the student must achieve a semester GPA of 2.0. Failure to meet the semester GPA requirement will result in dismissal.
  3. Students who are reinstated must register before the first day of class of the term for which they are reinstated. If a student does not register, a service indicator blocking registration will be placed on the student’s record on the first day of class. In addition, a note will be placed in the student's file indicating that the student failed to meet the registration deadline.

Please Note

In order to ensure equity between inter-campus transfer students and transfer students from outside the IU system, only IUPUI grades will be considered in determining probation and dismissal.

The School of Liberal Arts, School of Science, and University College, in agreement with this common policy, will honor academic probation and dismissal status from other units.

Students may also be academically dismissed or released from a particular program if they do not make consistent and appropriate academic progress relevant to their fields of study. This is left to the discretion of the appropriate officer in the school.

University College policy concerning academic dismissal is that students who are dismissed for the first time from IUPUI, IUB, PU, IU regional campuses, or other IUPUI schools, must sit out for a minimum of one regular (fall or spring) semester and petition by the established deadlines to be reinstated.

The STAR Mentoring Program  (Students Taking Academic Responsibility)

Each semester, the Office of Academic and Career Development provides a free service to students on first-time academic probation. The STAR Program is a semester-long intensive mentoring program for University College students in academic difficulty. As noted in the Academic Probation Policy for University College, STAR is a required mandatory intervention option (the other option is participation in group mentoring sessions for the semester) that students may choose.

STAR provides a mentor to support students as they work to get back to good academic standing. The mentors assist students with becoming more focused by working together to address challenges, improve strengths, and connect to the various resources on campus that can help them reach their academic and career goals. There is no financial cost to participate in STAR. However, it requires a commitment on the part of the student to attend their weekly appointments (for 30 minutes) with their mentor and to work hard to improve their academics. A combination of students and professional staff from across campus volunteer each semester to be mentors for the STAR Program.

If you want to know more about this Program, please ask your advisor when you meet to discuss how to get back on track toward good academic standing.
