Students: Career Planning: Before Contacting an Alumni Mentor

1. When contacting your alumni mentor (either via email or phone), politely introduce yourself and let him/her know you found their profile through the IUPUI Alumni Mentor Database.
2. Ask the mentor if they would mind answering questions about his/her education, job, career field, employer, etc.
3. Ask the mentor if he/she would like to communicate entirely via email (send the questions to him/her) or if he/she prefers setting up an appointment to speak on the phone or (if time and locations allow) meet in person.
4. After the communication, the student should express his/her appreciation for the mentor's time and the information provided. Even if the student does not decide to purseu this field, he/she should thank the mentor for his/her time and simply state that the information provided helped the student to determine it was not the best fit for him/her.
