Students: Career Planning: Internships: FAQ

Who Is Eligible For Credit-Earning Internships??
Most academic departments use the following basic criteria:

  1. Are at least sophomores.
  2. Have a minimum of 2.5 GPA (Some departments have a higher requirement. Check with your department.)
  3. Have completed a minimum of one semester at IUPUI.
  4. Are degree-seeking.
  5. Additional requirements per academic department (check with the Internship Coordinator within your academic department.)

May I Get Credit for An Internship I've Already Completed?
Typically, most academic departments require students to make arrangements with their Internship Coordinator prior to the beginning of the internship. Your academic program and faculty will enforce this policy. To receive credit for an internship, your department or school will require their approval of you and the internship prior to your first day on the internship.

Will I have to pay for a Credit-Earning Internship?
You will be charged tuition for credit-earning internships. A one-credit internship costs the same as a one-credit course.

How many credits may I earn for my internship?
This depends on your academic department's policies. Some schools/departments award credit based on the projects you complete, while other schools/departments have a minimum number of hours per academic credit.

How do I Evaluate the Quality of an Internship Opportunity?
It's very important that you ask questions and carefully consider internship opportunities before you verbally accept an internship or sign an agreement. Need sample questions to get started

What if I Have a Problem With My Internship?
Problems during an internship occasionally occur. Please don't hesitate to contact your academic department's Internship Coordinator as soon as possible regarding any concerns you may have about your internship experience.
