Students: Career Planning: Seaching for a Job

There are a lot of different ways to search for a job, whether it is for a part-time job while taking classes, an internship to gain experience, or a full-time position for after you graduate. When searching for a job, make sure you are utilizing ALL resources possible. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Online:
    • www.jagjobs.org Link will open in a new window JagJobs lists everything from part time on campus to full time off campus.
    • http://www.iupui.edu/academic/schoolsdepts.htm Link will open in a new window Check your school’s Web site for job openings.
    • www.hra.iupui.eduLink will open in a new window The IUPUI Human Resources Web site lists part- and full-time positions on campus.
    • For off-campus opportunities, check into a variety of Web sites (e.g., CareerBuilder at www.careerbuilder.com Link will open in a new window). Also, look at professional organization Web sites that are specific to your major and career.
  • Networking: The term “networking” may sound intimidating, but it all depends on how you look at it. Start with who you know, like friends, family, former bosses, co-workers, faculty, and people that you are comfortable talking to and who care about you and your professional success.
  • Newspaper ads: When you are on campus, pick up a free copy of the Indianapolis Star and take a look at the classifieds section. Also, you may find job openings listed in the Sagamore, the university newspaper.
  • Job and career fairs
  • E-mail and electronic mailing lists: Check your e-mail for job announcements on general electronic mailing lists (e.g., JagNews) and through department/school specific electronic mailing lists.
  • Class announcements: Professors and instructors may announce job openings in your classes.
  • On-campus recruiting: Employers schedule recruiting on-campus visits through our office and with individual schools. Check with your school to find out about upcoming employer visits scheduled specifically with your school.
  • Contact employer directly: Do you know where you want to work? Contact that employer and ask about job openings.
  • Campus bulletin boards: As you are walking down the halls, glance at flyers posted on bulletin boards.
  • Volunteer: This is a fantastic way to meet other people and increase your network of contacts.
  • Clubs and organizations: Clubs and organizations will keep you up to date on the latest trends in your field and provide opportunities to meet with various employers.

REMEMBER! Before you begin your job search, make sure you have a resume prepared. Have a few people look at it prior to giving it to employers. Have a family member or friend, your career services office, and, if possible, someone who works in the field review your resume. With any job search, it can sometimes take a while, so hang in there. Do your best to stay positive and motivated. Here are some tips:

  • Set goals for your job search
  • Attend personal and professional workshops and seminars
  • Manage stress (e.g., work out, go on walks, meditate)
  • Make time to go out and have some fun (everyone needs a break!)
