Students: Career Planning: Seaching for a Job
There are a lot of different ways to search for a job, whether it is for a part-time job while taking classes, an internship to gain experience or a full-time position for after you graduate. When searching for a job make sure you are utilizing ALL resources possible. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- On-line
- www.jagjobs.org
- JagJobs lists everything from part-time on-campus to full time off-campus. - http://www.iupui.edu/academic/schoolsdepts.htm
- Check your school’s website for job openings. - www.hra.iupui.edu
- IUPUI Human Resources site lists part and full-time positions on campus. - For off-campus opportunities check into a variety of sites (Ex. Career Builder at www.careerbuilder.com
). Also, utilize professional organization websites that are specific to your major/career.
- Networking - The term “networking” may sound intimidating but it all depends on how you look at it. Start with who you know like friends, family, former bosses and co-workers, faculty – people that you are comfortable talking to and who care about you and your professional success.
- Newspaper ads - When you are on campus pick up a FREE copy of the Indianapolis Star and take a look at the classified section. Also, you may find job openings listed in the The Sagamore, the university newspaper
- Job/Career fairs
- Email Listservs - Check your email for job announcements on general listservs (ex. JagNews) and through department/school specific listservs
- Class announcements - Professors/instructors may announce job openings in your classes
- On-campus recruiting - Employers schedule recruiting on-campus visits through our office and with individual schools. Check with your school to find out about upcoming employer visits scheduled specifically with your school.
- Contact employer directly - Do you know where you want to work? Contact that employer and ask about job openings.
- Campus bulletic boards - As you are walking down the halls glance at flyers posted on bulletin boards.
- Volunteer - This is a fantastic way to meet other people and increase your network of contacts.
- Clubs and organizations - Clubs and organizations will keep you up on the latest trends in your field and provide opportunities to meet with various employers.
REMEMBER! Before you begin your job search make sure you have a resume prepared. Have a few people look at prior to giving it out to employers. Have a family member or friend, your Career Services office and if possible someone who works in the field review your resume.
With any job search it can sometimes take a while so hang in there. Do your best to stay positive and motivated. Here are some tips:
