The STAR Mentoring Program  (Students Taking Academic Responsibility)

Each semester, the Office of Academic and Career Development provides a free service to students on first-time academic probation. The STAR Program is a semester-long intensive mentoring program for University College students in academic difficulty. As noted in the Academic Probation Policy for University College, STAR is a required mandatory intervention option (the other option is participation in group mentoring sessions for the semester) that students may choose.

STAR provides a mentor to support students as they work to get back to good academic standing. The mentors assist students with becoming more focused by working together to address challenges, improve strengths, and connect to the various resources on campus that can help them reach their academic and career goals. There is no financial cost to participate in STAR. However, it requires a commitment on the part of the student to attend their weekly appointments (for 30 minutes) with their mentor and to work hard to improve their academics. A combination of students and professional staff from across campus volunteer each semester to be mentors for the STAR Program.

If you want to know more about this Program, please ask your advisor when you meet to discuss how to get back on track toward good academic standing.

Student Support Services

Student Support Services (SSS) adds an extra layer of support, guidance, and answers throughout the college years of first generation students (neither parent has graduated from a 4-year college).  This award-winning program is one of the most successful in the nation; students participating in the program have a high student retention and graduation rate. Students become a part of the SSS family for their entire time at IUPUI and can get free tutoring, academic and personal advising, and help with financial aid.  SSS is a home base on campus where students have mentors, develop friendships, and have social events or just hang out!  The SSS offices are located on the third floor of University College, Room UC 3130.

Supplemental Instruction

The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, which is based on a successful national model, was adopted by University College to help you succeed in your courses. Students who have been successful in specific courses and recommended by the faculty of those courses serve as student mentors for the SI program. The SI mentors are learning assistants who are content-competent in a particular subject and can assist you in gaining a better understanding of course material. They can also help you develop learning skills to enhance your academic experience. In their sessions, SI mentors demonstrate processes and methodologies for effective learning (i.e., learning strategies, note-taking skills, listening skills, test anxiety, etc.). The SI mentors are not tutors, but rather they are facilitators who can help you develop the thinking and reasoning skills which characterize intellectual maturity. SI mentors are academic facilators, empathetic listeners, resource guides, and most of all, supportive friends. Please stop by the Resource Desk on the second floor of Joseph T. Taylor Hall in the Bepko Learning Center to learn more about the SI sessions and the time and place of the meetings. All sessions are free to students. Office for Student Success

The Office For Student Success is a relatively new unit within University College comprised of Financial Literacy, Student African American Brotherhood, and Student African American Sisterhood programming.

Financial Literacy – With the growing trends of college students and rising debt, University College is taking steps to educate students on financial literacy to include basic understanding of general budgeting, credit card awareness, effective use of resources, working while in college and the connection of financial aid to academic persistence. Through continual research and best practice evaluations, the Office for Student Success will continue to offer student presentations and financial literacy informational pieces to entering students as well as the general IUPUI student body.

Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) - The Student African-American Brotherhood seeks to address initiatives such as mentoring, retention, graduation and connectedness for African-American students on campus through social and academic interventions. SAAB was established in the fall of 1990 on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University in response to the needs of African-American men enrolled in college who were lagging behind. The primary goal today is for all African-American males to take advantage of their academic years to better understand and practice their full responsibilities, rights and privileges. Furthermore, the Student African-American Brotherhood at IUPUI seeks to address issues that are germane to this specific population. SAAB works to

  • Create less threatening environments
  • Support and nurture environments
  • Promote accountability/commitment
  • Promote leadership
  • Provide a network of peers and professional African-American men who are involved in mentoring and tutoring on the campus and in our communities
  • Advocate for excellence on campus in diversity, social arena ,and academia

Student African American Sisterhood (SAAS) – very similar in nature to the programmatic goals of SAAB, SAAS seeks to address similar issues with the African American female student population at IUPUI. Growing from a student organization, SAAS initiatives will continue to expand upon the student organization mission and goals by further supporting and infusing academic components such as intrusive advising practices, retention programming and academic problem solving strategies.

The Office For Student Success is located on the lower level of Taylor Hall and may be reached at 317-278-6856 for more information.

Structured Learning Assistance

University College is very proud of its Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) program, which was developed to help students succeed in specific courses. The SLA sections, which meet for one-hour-per-week, are directed study and practice sessions that are attached to courses that have proved to be challenging for many students. SLA sessions are centered on course content. In each session, you will learn how to apply study and learning skills to specific course materials. You will also learn content background information to assist you in making connections between the lessons and lectures of the class. In addition, you will learn how to work collaboratively and how to form study teams. Courses with a Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) component:

Tutor Job Description

As a tutor, you would be able to set your own pay rate and hours. You can work as much or as little as you want. However, we cannot guarantee that you will get as many hours as you want. This is usually determined by what classes you tutor and how many students need tutors for those classes. You must have received an A in the courses that you wish to tutor. To apply, you must submit an application, a signed sexual harassment form, and a copy of your unofficial transcript (this is available on OneStart Link will open in a new window) to the Bepko Learning Center (UC 2006) in person. Tutors must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. The Bepko Learning Center will put the names of tutors in a database and act as a referral service to our student contacts. Upon request, we will give students tutors' names from our database and explain how to contact the tutors. All tutors are required to meet with students in a public place, on campus if possible.

For more information about finding a tutor or becoming a tutor, please call 317-274-4818 or stop by the Bepko Learning Center on the second floor of Joseph T. Taylor Hall.
